River between lakes
Aug. 23, Washburn-Cross Ranch, 18 miles, W breeze, 88/58—In the morning the Lewis and Clark re-enactors asked me to paddle with them to Bismarck but I wanted to get back on the bike. In theory, that is. My notes for the day’s short ride don't sound so positive: tired, unenthusiastic, clumsy, sore neck.
Morning was spent at the newish Lewis and Clark interpretive center, afternoon wondering why I wasn’t riding north to the Knife River Villages. But Cross Ranch State Park was also on my must-go list. Next to the state park, the Nature Conservancy has a 5,000-acre preserve. On arrival I took a long shower, then took another one. In the evening I looked at birds from the grassy riverbank, next to a floodplain forest of cottonwood, box elder, and green ash. The Missouri River here—between Garrison Dam and the top of Lake Oahe—is about as wild as it gets and the most beautiful I’ve seen it, with few wing dikes or riprap, and islands splitting the channel.

I'm understanding the hook...When the *$#@* will you post?!
The mileage has taken its toll painted with lines to show, you've had your fill of asphalt...You look like the habit controls you, look like you need a rest...Find yourself somewhere else, too early in the sun. Never seen half of what you've seen, real life never quite adds up. The road goes on when the faces don't, word of mouth never tells the truth. Like to hear your story told, with a two step beaten rhyme...Could be Tennessee or Texas, on and on that road winds...Find yourself somewhere else, too early in the sun.
(Thanks Son Volt)
Biker Matt: Thought hard about Pierre, would've liked to go, but tricky to fit into a N-S route. Funny how lots of highways in central S.D. end at the interstate and jog east or west, reduces choices for riders. Thanks for advice, though. Other Dakota capital, Bismarck, also very likeable, wouldn't mind living there.
